HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — An accountant for a real estate company was accused of stealing over $15,000 from clients.
On March 11, the Guam Police Department responded to a real estate company in Tamuning where they met with the owners who reported a former employee, Hanneaka Therese McDonald, stole approximately $15,148.27 from two of their clients.
According to the magistrate’s complaint, McDonald, 28, was accused of stealing the money from Oct. 1, 2023, to Feb. 12, 2024, and “had been found stealing cash money directly from tenants by having customers pay in cash directly to her” before McDonald falsified invoice amounts.
“The defendant voided cash receipts that were cut by other bookkeepers and rewrote new receipts. The defendant would provide the correct receipt but would falsify the yellow copies, which were written in ink,” the complaint stated.
One of the owners of the real estate company told officers the alleged theft occurred while the owner was on maternity leave, and McDonald took over as the acting accounting supervisor and would work in an office alone at the company.
The owners also, according to the complaint, provided officers with supporting documents that had McDonald’s signature, as well as a USB thumb drive containing a spreadsheet of their investigation.
When interviewed by police, McDonald told officers she worked at the company for about three years and had been promoted to acting supervisor during her boss’ maternity leave.
“The defendant denied the theft,” the complaint stated. McDonald was arrested Monday at 9:30 a.m.
McDonald was charged with theft of property held in trust as a second-degree felony.
