HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — A John F. Kennedy High School student, Catherine Farrer, was chosen alongside 100 students across the United States and territories to be awarded the J-100 Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship, a first for the school and the island, according to a press release from the Guam Department of Education.
Each year, cadets from 910 public and Department of Defense schools across the United States and its territories compete for the J-100 scholarship.
“As JFKHS’ recipient this year, she is one of the 100 cadets selected from 114 individual AFJROTC units representing 31 states, territories and six countries,” said GDOE in the release.
The scholarships award cadets with 100% paid tuition for four years at the cadet’s university of choice that has an AFROTC program, a $10,000 yearly allowance for university-owned/on-campus housing, an annual book stipend and monthly cadet stipend.
The Piti resident went from being a drill team member as a freshman to armed drill team commander this past year. In addition, she was selected as the unit’s mission support squadron commander, placing her in one of the top five positions in the 197-member strong cadet corps.
“The dedication and commitment Catherine has consistently demonstrated earned her a place on the off-island drill competition team each spring since her enrollment into AFJROTC as a ninth grader. Over the past four years, her hard work has seen (her) and her teammates secure first-, second-, third- and fourth-place performance trophies,” said GDOE.
Outside AFJROTC, she is a member of the Academic Challenge Bowl, AFJROTC Kitty Hawk Honors Society and Aviation Club.
“Cadet Catherine Farrer is deserving of all recognition and applause for this outstanding achievement,” said JFK principal Barbara Adamos.
The JFK AFJROTC program is led by three instructors, Master Sgt. Joseph Mafnas, Senior Master Sgt. Victor Rosario and Lt. Col. S. Kellie Williams.
