Alleged rapist on trial for 2020 complaints

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — Trial in the Superior Court of Guam continued this week for a man accused of raping a 12-year-old girl known to him.

In the trial against Daniel “Danny” Vincent Rodriguez, his attorney on Monday questioned an officer with the Guam Police Department who investigated the complaint made against Rodriguez.

The officer, Mary Jane Raval, was cross-examined by Rodriguez’s attorney, Curtis Van de veld, who asked about photos taken at Rodriguez’s residence.

According to court documents, the 12-year-old girl reported to police Rodriguez had been sexually assaulting her since she was about 6 years old. She told officers the alleged assaults took place in a residence after Rodriguez took her there to feed livestock.

Van de veld asked Raval about a photo of a room in the residence where Rodriguez allegedly raped the minor. The room in the photos appeared to be used for storage, which Raval eventually confirmed.

Van de veld asked if there were any details in the cluttered room that could have indicated if “sexual activity” occurred.

“No, sir,” Raval said in response.

Raval further explained the ranch was in a secluded area.

Raval was the third witness to take the stand since the trial started Monday last week.

Charges

Rodriguez faces multiple counts and is accused of sexually penetrating the girl in January 2020 and March through April 30, 2020.

The girl and her mother reported the alleged sexual assaults to officers at the Dededo police precinct in November 2020.

The girl told police, according to court documents filed by the prosecution, “from the time she was approximately 6 years old, in about 2014 until 2020″ Rodriguez had been sexually assaulting her.

“The victim described that the assaults began when she was about 6 years old and started over her clothes, but as she got older, the defendant started removing her clothes to assault her,” according to court documents.

The rape began when she was 11 and continued when she turned 12, court documents state. The alleged assaults took place in her home and in a ranch after the defendant took her there to feed livestock, court documents state.

The defendant faces multiple counts of first- and second-degree sexual assault.
