Boni Sagana will return to Saipan on July 26 or 28

FORMER guest worker advocate Bonifacio “Boni” Sagana will arrive on Saipan on July 26 or 28, the U.S. Marshals Service told the federal court on Wednesday.

Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona of the District Court for the NMI was informed that travel arrangements were being made for Sagana.

Judge Manglona, for her part, said she will issue an order regarding Sagana’s appearance.

An arraignment was set for Aug. 3, 2022 at 9 a.m.

Sagana, who is currently in Wisconsin and out of custody, appeared via videoconference and was represented by Assistant Federal Defender Krista Halla-Valdes who also appeared via videoconference.

Court-appointed attorney Richard Miller also appeared for Sagana while Assistant U.S. Attorney Garth Backe represented he federal government.

The federal court earlier granted Sagana’s request for travel and subsistence expenses.

On Jan. 31, 2022, the federal court issued an arrest warrant for Sagana after a grand jury indicted him on the charge of conspiracy to unlawfully produce an identification document.

Sagana, however, had already left Saipan before he could be arrested.

According to the other defendants, it was Sagana who arranged for them to fraudulently obtain a CNMI driver’s license using a counterfeit U.S. immigration visa number.

On May 16, 2022, Sagana was arrested in Wisconsin.
