Compact meeting in Washington D.C. on June 8

Earlier the United States and Palau   held its first meeting of the formal review of the financial provision of the two countries  under the compact.

In the first meeting, no specific recommendations have been made yet from both parties, in the meeting the two technical groups agreed to a timetable that will allow the Compact review to be completed by Oct.1, 2009.The two countries also agreed a date to meet anew for the second meeting of the formal review on July 6, 2009 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Alcy Frelick the lead representative of the United States Inter-Agency Team on Compact Review, said that specific recommendations will have to be made first, then the review will follow.Frelick is also the Director of the Office of Australian, New Zealand and Pacific Islands Affairs. The review will  look into Palau’s current economic situation and the current strategic development plans  in relation to the government of Palau’s goals and objectives and how the government of Palau will achieve these goals and objectives and how the U.S. could contribute to the achievement of those goals and objectives.

The review will also include implementation to date of the security and defense provisions of the Compact.
