THE Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board members on Friday unanimously approved the extension of CUC Executive Director Gary Camacho’s contract for two more years.
His current contract expires on March 27, 2021, and requires 30-day notice on whether it will be renewed or not.
Following a lengthy evaluation of Camacho’s performance, the board decided to renew his contact.
It was CUC board member Jovita Sn. Paulino who made the motion to renew Camacho.
CUC Chairwoman Miranda V. Manglona, vice chairman Weston Thomas Deleon Guerrero, and Commonwealth Development Authority representative to the CUC board Aubrey Hocog seconded the motion.
Board member Mathew Holley was not present at the meeting.
In February 2017, District Court for the NMI designated Judge David O. Carter approved Camacho’s appointment as required by the federal court’s stipulated orders.
At the time, Camacho had already served CUC for 25 years and was its power generation division manager.
In 2019 Camacho’s contract as CUC executive director was extended for another two years with an annual compensation of over $150,000.
Camacho on Friday said he is very grateful to the board members and staff.
“I really greatly appreciate all the support from the board members and the community,” he said. “These are difficult times, but I have great staff — wonderful people. These are the best people that anybody can work with. They are professional, hardworking, and committed to assisting and helping the community. There is no place I’d rather be than with CUC.”
He said, “Every once in a while we have our challenge, but we continue to become better and we continue to repair or replace our infrastructure, and we are moving toward a new power plant to secure the future of the island’s power supply.”
For her part, CUC Chairwoman Miranda Manglona said Camacho “faced many challenges, including the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, so each of the board member was given the opportunity to assess his performance. Our decision is based on his performance.”
She said Camacho is “driven and continues to address the challenges seriously — he is making sure that the delivery of services is not undermined or cut off.”
