DPS responds to report of an overdue kayaker

(DPS) — On Friday, Oct. 1, 2021, at about 2:41 p.m., the Department of Public Safety  received a call regarding a capsized kayak just outside the lagoon across from  National Office Supply on Beach Road.

At about 2:58 p.m., DPS Boating Safety Section  launched a jetboat from  Smiling Cove Marina to assist. At about 3:18 p.m., the jetboat arrived at the capsized kayak and did not notice any operator nearby. A surface diver was deployed as the jetboat continued to search between Olei and the Garapan Fishing Base.

At about 5:21 p.m., both the jet ski and the Zodiac rescue boat were launched to assist in the search. They then made their way toward the area.

During the first-day search, the following items were recovered: a yellow kayak, black Jansport bag pack, and two blue cushions.

The search was called off at about 6:54 p.m., due to low light, but it was continued the next day.

On Saturday, Oct. 2, 2021, at about 7 a.m., DPS rescue boats and et skis along with the DFEMS Fire and Rescue boat departed the Smiling Cove Marina to continue the search for the over-due kayaker. At about 8:15 a.m., one  U.S. Coast Guard rescue helicopter arrived from Guam to assist in the search.

At about 11:08 a.m., a boater entering the channel noticed an unresponsive individual floating in the water. The witness onboard immediately called 911 for police assistance. A nearby jet ski was dis- patched to meet with the boater.

The body was brought to the Fishing Base Marina where a family member identified the victim as Juan A. Aldan.

At about 11:18 a.m., medics transported the victim to CHCC where Dr. Brian Strickland pronounced the victim dead at 11:29 a.m.

DPS encourages kayakers to notify friends and/or family members about your float plan or what area you plan to visit and what time you expect to return. Always remember to include the proper type of lifejacket for each individual on board.
