Governor appoints 5 to government boards

GOVERNOR Arnold I. Palacios on Monday appointed Rebecca Agnes C. White to the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board; Monique B. Sablan and Elizabeth Emma Itibus to the CNMI Scholarship board; Dana Calvo to the Commonwealth Economic Development Authority board; and Sachiko N. Gerrard to the Marianas Visitors Authority board.

The governor, who withdrew his appointment of local attorney Robert Myers to represent Rota on the CUC board last week, nominated White to serve a four-year term on the board representing Saipan. Her appointment requires Senate confirmation.

In his appointment letter, the governor told White that he and Lt. Gov. David M. Apatang are confident that she is qualified and will devote her time and efforts to the best interest of CUC. They also appreciate her willingness to serve the CNMI people, the governor said.

The governor stated in his appointment letter to Sablan and Itibus that he and the lt. governor are confident that the appointees are qualified and will be an asset to the scholarship board.

Sablan will serve the remaining term of Geralyn Dela Cruz that will expire on June 22, 2026.

Itibus will fill the seat of Zerlyn Taimanao whose term will expire on June 22, 2023. At the same time, the governor is reappointing Itibus for a subsequent four-year term that will expire on June 22, 2027.

The appointments of Sablan and Itibus also require Senate consent.

The governor told Calvo that he and the lt. governor know that she will devote her time and efforts on the CEDA board.

Calvo, who will represent Rota, will fill the seat of Aubry Hocog whose term will expire on Sept. 25, 2025. Hocog has been elected Rota mayor.

The governor nominated Gerrard for the MVA board seat that will be vacated by Thomas T.H. Liu whose four-year term will expire on July 17, 2023. Palacios and Apatang are confident that Gerrard will devote his time and efforts in fostering a sustainable tourism industry.

In an interview on Monday, the governor said he will soon name his nominee to the Commonwealth Ports Authority board who will serve the remaining term of its former vice chairman, Roman Tudela.
