Governor vetoes Tinian appropriation bill

GOVERNOR Arnold I. Palacios on Friday vetoed an appropriation bill for Tinian due to insufficient funds.

Authored by House Minority Leader Patrick San Nicolas, House Local Bill 22-44 proposes to appropriate $344,000 in poker fees as follows:

—$281,500 for the Tinian Mayor’s Office personnel and operations.

—$50,000 for the Tinian mayor’s discretionary account.

—$7,500 for the Tinian Municipal Scholarship.

—$5,000 for the Tinian Athletics Sports Association.

In his veto message to the Tinian and Aguigan Legislative Delegation chairman, Sen. Karl King-Nabors, and Speaker Edmund S. Villagomez, the governor said, “I have been informed by the Department of Finance that as of January 20, 2023…, insufficient funds exist from collected poker fees to cover the appropriation set forth in House Local Bill 22-44.”

Due to the insufficient funds, the governor said he “must respectfully exercise my constitutional authority to veto this bill.”
