Guam governor discusses economic development and tourism with Taiwan president

TAIPEI, Taiwan (Office of the Guam Governor) — During her first official visit to Taiwan, Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero met with President Lai Ching-te on May 27, 2025, to reaffirm Guam and Taiwan’s longstanding partnership and explore opportunities for expanded cooperation in tourism, healthcare, and economic development.

President Lai welcomed the Guam delegation at the Presidential Office and  hosted  a  luncheon in their honor, recognizing Guam’s strategic role as the closest U.S. territory to Taiwan and a vital link for Taiwan-U.S. collaboration.

President Lai emphasized the value of growing bilateral engagement, particularly following the recent launch of direct United Airlines flights between Taipei and Guam. President Lai stated that Guam and Taiwan are connected not only by proximity but by shared Austronesian heritage and a deep commitment to democratic values. He added that together, we can enhance regional peace, economic resilience, and mutual prosperity.

Governor  Leon  Guerrero  expressed  her  appreciation  for  Taiwan’s  warm  hospitality  and reaffirmed Guam’s readiness to expand partnerships in tourism, healthcare, and innovation. She noted Taiwan’s leadership in areas such as education, agriculture, AI, and technology, and emphasized Guam’s interest in collaborating on efforts that improve quality of life and advance economic growth.

“Our islands share more than geography — we share values rooted in family, tradition, and community,” said Governor Leon Guerrero. “With tourism as a key pillar of Guam’s economy, we look forward to deepening air connectivity and expanding opportunities for travel, trade, and exchange.”

Governor Leon Guerrero also introduced members of her delegation representing various sectors and expressed her commitment to building a stronger Guam-Taiwan relationship through continued cooperation on shared goals and challenges.
