Harvest House honors doctors for caring for foster children

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — Two pediatricians were singled out for their contributions to Guam foster children over the years in line with National Pediatrician Day.

Jan. 28 is recognized as National Pediatrician Day, a time to honor pediatricians who live up to the namesake, which means “healer of children.” Dr. Amanda Del Rosario and Dr. Mike Um from One Love Pediatrics are the epitome of that, according to Harvest House Executive Director Bethany Taylor.

“This mighty duo couple has cared for hundreds of foster children. Compassion spearheads their mission of providing quality medical care to these children who have been victims of abuse,” Harvest House said.

Foster parents understand that foster children endure major changes to their lives as they enter and exit foster homes, but Harvest House said that the foster parents can rest assured that the level of health care these vulnerable children receive from the doctors remains constant.

“These children become part of their One Love clinic family,” Taylor said. “I have personally watched Dr. Mike gently care for severely malnourished children, drug-exposed infants, mental and physical disabilities, asthmatic kids, and lots of really sick kids. One time, he even let me hand my foster baby back to his biological parents in his office while I said my final goodbye. It meant a lot to me to know my foster baby would have good medical care and another family network to support them. I have shed tears in that office, and I have witnessed doctors who are brave enough to shed a tear too.”

Giving honor where it’s due, Harvest House recognized Del Rosario for continuing to provide care to foster children no matter where she practices.

“Dr. Amanda has seen many foster children while at (American Medical Center), and now she gets to continue their care at One Love. She is thorough, yet always deeply invested in the well-being of her patients. She goes above and beyond to give quality care. You will catch her smiling and laughing with the kids too,” Harvest House said.

The two were gifted tokens of appreciation, which included a Harvest House plaque and a drawing done by a foster child that read “Thank you Dr. Mike and Dr. Amanda for helping us foster kids.”
