(Office of Rep. Tina Sablan) — The House Standing Committee on Health and Welfare is hosting the Legislature’s first CNMI Pride Talks, taking place in the House chamber on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at 9 a.m.
“Pride Talks will include a policy roundtable with leaders from LGBTQ+ organizations and a public forum to discuss the needs of the community and how the Legislature can assist in creating a more inclusive CNMI,” Health and Welfare Chair Tina Sablan said.
“The members of the Health and Welfare Committee look forward to an open and respectful dialogue about what we can do as a community to better support the health, equality, and wellbeing of LGBTQ+ people in the CNMI,” she added.
“Everyone should be afforded equal access to opportunities and advancement,” LGBTQ advocate and proud transgender woman Tyra Lynn Sablan said. “Our youth deserve to know that their government recognizes them as people, and it is our responsibility to make sure everyone in our community thrives.”
CNMI Pride Talks will start with public comments and questions, and will be followed by a discussion between invited guests from LGBTQ+ organizations and the committee members.
Members of the public are encouraged to attend and RSVP by emailing [email protected] or calling 664-8829. The event will be broadcast on Channel 23 and streamed live on the Northern Marianas Commonwealth Legislature’s Facebook page.
