THE Consular Office of Japan on Saipan led by Consul Ryoji Takagaki hosted the 63rd birthday celebration of Japanese Emperor Naruhito at the Fiesta Hall of Grandvrio Resort Saipan on Thursday.
Gov. Arnold I. Palacios, Lt. Gov. David M. Apatang, other officials and business community members were among those who joined the festivity.
“Due to the resurgence of Covid-19 last [year], we weren’t able to hold the reception. But with the continuous effort of the CNMI government and the community, I am glad that we are able to safely hold a reception today,” Takagaki said in his remarks.
“As everyone may be aware, the war between Ukraine and Russia began [in] February [last year] and it is still ongoing,” he added.
“During this devastating period, it makes me realize the importance of peace. The peace and prosperity we enjoy today are built on the ultimate sacrifices of those who lost their lives in the war. Even here in the CNMI, we must not forget that while some of us have never experienced war, we did not build this peace alone and we have an obligation to tell the next generation the importance of peace,” the consul added.
In a separate interview, Gov. Palacios said the event underscores the long-standing relationship between Japan and the islands.
Acting Office of Planning & Development Director Chris Concepcion also noted the islands’ historical ties with Japan.
“The tourism industry as we all know is founded upon the visitors from Japan many years ago, so having a close relationship with Japan is very important,” he added.
