Japan provides grant to PAWS

The signing ceremony was conducted on Nov. 12, 2008 at the Embassy of Japan.

The grant proposal was submitted by PAWS and the grant award will be used by PAWS to purchase a hematology machine to be used by the Koror State Animal Shelter.

PAWS Director Valerie Lowson said that the piece of equipment will enable the veterinarian and clinic staff at the shelter for the diagnosis and treatment of animals and animal-related diseases.

Lowson signed in behalf of PAWS while Japan’s Charge d’ affaires Dr. Kunio Nakamura signed for the Japan government.

PAWS said that diseases such as avian influenza, leptospirosis, hepatitis, parvovirus, and ehlichia can spread from animals to humans if not detected, treated and prevented.

He added that such diseases not only pose a risk to the public it can also have a devastating effect on tourism ands economy in general.

Nakamura said, “the grant assistance will ensure better health for the animals of Palau, which in turn help improve Palau’s public health, its tourism industry and its economy in general.”

He said that “indeed this project is a symbol of our friendly relations and common concern for a healthier population and environment.”

The embassy said that the government of Japan offers financial assistance scheme for the development projects designed to meet the needs of diverse countries.

PAWS submitted an application for Japan’s Grant Assistance for grassroots Human Security Projects.
