(JKPL) — On Dec. 30, 2022, the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library received a congratulatory letter from U.S. Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan for the following allotted federal funds:
• $1.2 million for JKPL’s solar power system; and
• $436,191 for the public libraries (Saipan, Rota, and Tinian) furniture upgrade.
In his letter to Library Director Erlinda C. Naputi, Congressman Kilili said:
“Congratulations. Two Joeten-Kiyu Public Library projects worth $1,636,191, for which I requested congressionally directed funding, were included in the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023 [that] President Biden signed into law today…. I thank you for providing substantive and convincing descriptions for each of these library projects earlier this year as requested. Success in obtaining funding is in large measure due to the quality of your proposals.”
Library Director Erlinda C. Naputi said “it was due to Congressman Kilili’s continued hard work and diligent efforts that Joeten-Kiyu Public Library was able to obtain this much needed funding assistance. Congressman Kilili never gave up on us. We shared with his team our challenges, and he actively pursued federal funding support for the library. With funding in the works for a solar power system, we are very hopeful that our utility bill will be greatly reduced once the solar power system is launched. the solar polar system project and the furniture upgrade project are in line with our LSTA 5-Year Strategic Plan 2023-2027, Goal 4. Provide Welcoming Library Environments. These great projects will benefit the entire CNMI community. We are truly grateful for this historical news for the library.”
