Kids learn basic Palauan chants and language classes at BNM

The summer program aims to introduce Palauan language and concept to children as well as to uphold the museum’s mission to promote the Palauan culture.

For July 12 to 16, classes will be ochur el tekoi er belau or counting numbers and bedengel a klalou, Palauan colors. Chesols lessons or Palauan chants as well as basic Palauan conversation and respect are scheduled on July 19 to 23.

“For this week are teaching them how to count and recognize colors in Palauan,” said Meked Besebes, BNM’s Ethnographer. Meked teaches the basic Palauan language class with the assistance of the Summer School student volunteers.

Chesols or Palauan chants will be taught by Dirrengechel Sarian Tmatk, a woman elder.

“This is the first time that we’re doing this,” said Besebes, “But we hope that this could develop into an annual summer program.”

So far this week, the six kids who were the first to register in the classes were already enjoying exploring the museum and learning Palauan language.

“We are still open for registration,” said Besebes.”We want to invite children age six to 10 to join the classes.”

The museum provides the materials. Registration fee is $10 for one week and $20 for two weeks.

“For information, they can just bring their children to the museum in the morning or call 488-2841,” informed Besebes.
