KSG to implement law that restrict anyone to enter Koror

According to Koror Gov. Yositaka Adachi, the new proposed law now includes everybody who is not registered voters in Koror.

“Now we will not only restrict Aimeliik and Ngarchelong but all the Palauans. If you are not registered voters we will not stop you to come in Koror but you have to pay.” Adachi said in an interview. “Everybody now is a victim.”

The fee is $10 per month for fishing and visiting the Rock Islands. However, Adachi added that this only a minimum fee and it could become higher.

The governor said he will have a meeting with the Koror State Legislature this week to discuss the issue.

“Once we see the draft and everybody will agree, the Legislature then will convene for a special session and conduct a two-day public hearing before it will be imposed.” Adachi said.

He said the law will take effect on July 1.

Earlier the KSG has drafted a law for Aimeliik and Ngarchelong States after the two failed to review their Bul.

The Bul is a traditional law stating that anyone who will be caught fishing within the territorial waters of Aimeliik and Ngarchelong will be sanctioned. Many residents from Koror State were affected by the Bul.

Adachi, however said that in order to avoid the discriminatory connotation, the KSG will allow everybody to enter in Koror but for a certain fee.
