REFUND checks worth $1.9 million have already been issued to taxpayers, Revenue and Taxation Director Esther Ada said yesterday.
“We are trying to move as fast as we can. We hope to meet our schedule,” Ada told Variety.
Yesterday, the CNMI Treasury mailed about 500 checks for individual refunds amounting to $590,000.
Last week, Ada said they processed 1,250 refund checks amounting to over $1.3 million.
“We are now scheduling the release of refunds every other week in coordination with the Treasury and the Finance Department,” Ada said.
There are more than 40,000 individual taxpayers in the CNMI. Some will receive refunds and some will get rebates, Ada added.
There were 1,028 taxpayers that filed for an extension after they failed to meet the April 15 deadline.
Revenue and Taxation granted an extension until Aug. 15.
The first release of the refund checks was based on the March 15 submission of tax returns.
The release of the $590,000 refunds was for those who filed their returns on March 18.
Ada said the rebate checks will be released after all the refund checks have been mailed.
Based on the law, Revenue and Taxation has to release the rebates six months after the filing date.
For those who met the April 15 deadline, the target date of release is Oct. 15.
