Variety president Laila C. Younis Boyer said the theme this year is “A Child’s Wish.”
“Teams will build what a child would wish for, and interested teams can just show up at the Hyatt Regency beach park tomorrow,” Boyer said.
The community is invited to join or watch the competition which will benefit the local chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Australia’s sand sculptor Dennis Massoud who arrived on Saipan yesterday morning will share his techniques in sand sculpting.
Sandcastle building classes
Massoud will hold classes at the Hyatt Beach Park from 8 a.m. to11:00 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. today.
Teams are invited to attend an instructional class that will cover sandcastle building techniques.
Team registration and setup will start at 7 a.m. tomorrow and the contest will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The professional sandcastle exhibition will start at 8 a.m. while the awards ceremony will be held from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Boyer said participating teams can join either in the company category with a $100 registration fee, or the organization/family or non-profit category with a $30 registration fee.
Contest mechanics
Each group must consist of four participants at a time, and the team’s sculpture must include a sandcastle.
Teams have six hours to construct their entry, using only sand from their assigned plot and ocean water. The teams must also comply with the regulations of the National Park Service and Coastal Resources Management.
Teams are urged to bring a large shovel, small paint brushes, rakes, straws, trowels, kitchen utensils, gardening tool, chairs, sun block, hats and beach wear.
Teams are not allowed to use plastic molds such as Jello containers, power tools, additives such as seashells, artificial trees and flowers, and stereos or MP3 players.
Trophies and cash prizes of $300, $200 and $100 are at stake for the first, second and third placers.
