3 festivals in one

This year, however, Saipan Mayor Donald G. Flores said both events will be included in the month-long Liberation Day celebration from June 4 to July 4.

“We will have three major festivities integrated in one month,” he said.

The mayor said Gov. Benigno R. Fitial talked to him about combining the three events as part of the cost-cutting measures of the cash-strapped central government.

Early preparation is very important since the three events will be celebrated starting this June, Flores added.

Each event will have a chairperson.

Earlier, Flores reappointed Hopwood Junior High School principal Jonas Barcinas as chairman of the Liberation Day Committee, but the educator said he prefers to continue helping the panel this time through its solicitation and hospitality program.

“I am placed in a very difficult situation and, this time, I am looking for a good leader to take charge of the festivities, someone  we can trust and  with a great attitude,” the mayor said.

Flores said he has yet to convince Barcinas to again chair the Liberation Day Committee.

This week, he said his office will start preparing for the 2011 Liberation Day program.

He said they will also work closely with the event coordinators for Family Fun Day and the Flame Tree Arts Festival.
