30-foot Christmas tree to be lit today

The giant tree, adorned with recycled materials, will be displayed with those decorated by  schools and other participants in this year’s decorating contest.

PDM Promoters Inc. CEO and director Misako Kamata said the giant Christmas tree will be on display until Jan. 7, 2010.

“We are inviting everyone to make a wish and tie a ribbon to the giant Christmas tree,” Kamata said.

Ribbons are of different colors: pink for breast cancer awareness, blue for autism awareness, yellow for showing support to the troops, green for Beautify CNMI and red for general purposes.

The Saipan Awaodori Team and the Street Market Performers will perform dance numbers.

“Please come and give us a hand in making the celebration colorful and memorable,” Kamata said.

The Paseo de Marianas teemed with students from 15 schools yesterday as they decorated their Christmas trees.

On Dec. 17, the winners will be announced during the Thursday street market. First prize will get $5,000; second prize, $3,000; and third prize, $2,000.

Five schools will get the fourth prize of $1,000 each, while seven  will receive $500 each as fifth prize.
