The Soil and Water Conservation District is under the Department of Lands and Natural Resources.
In the proposed budget of DLNR, the Soil and Water Conservation District was allotted $365 for its non-personnel costs.
Parks and Recreation, in contrast, will receive $102,500; Agriculture, $8,550; Lands and Registration, $3,367 and Fish and Wildlife, $3,136.
In an interview yesterday, Soil and Water Conservation District Chairman Isidoro T. Cabrera said they are tasked to oversee the irrigation system of the Kagman commercial farm plots which DLNR lease to local farmers.
The district, Cabrera said, also has to address soil erosion on Saipan and the Northern Islands.
The proposed FY 2009 budget allots $30,000 for the district’s personnel costs.
Cabrera said the district has one administrative officer and a water technician.
They are supposed to have a water manager but the position remains vacant.
The district is composed of Cabrera as chairman, Ike Cabrera, vice chairman, and Macy Deleon Guerrero and Jose Avila as board members.
