TWENTY-TWO CNMI residents are attending an operator of uninspected passenger vessel or OUPV class conducted by Adams Marine Seminars and 500 Sails, 500 Sails Program Manager Andrea Carr said.

The class began on Feb. 19 and will continue until the 27th at the 500 Sails Cultural Maritime Training Center in Lower Base. The instructor is Chris Adams.

With an OUPV license, a boat captain can carry up to six paying passengers on an uninspected vessel up to 100 tons in weight.

Carr said residents who pass the class can enter the maritime industry. License holders can become dive operators, offer transfers to Managaha, operate jet skis for hire, operate their boats for commercial fishing charters, and more.

500 Sails cannot accommodate any walk-in students, but the wait list for the next cohort of OUPV students is already being compiled. Carr said interested participants can contact 500 Sails at (670) 323-7245 or email cmtc@500sails.org/.

500 Sails and Adams Marine Seminars typically partner to offer maritime courses once a year.

Carr said the next marine certification course is for the masters license, and it will run from Feb. 28 to March 1.
