9 Japanese cultural exchange students to spend holiday season on Saipan

The group from the International Youth Association of Japan or KSKK will spend their holiday season from Dec. 24 to 30 on Saipan.

Vinycia Seman, the mayor’s executive secretary, said it’s the second visit of the group for this year.

On February and October, the mayor’s office also sent students from Saipan and Tinian to Japan.

While in Japan, the students not only visited schools, tourist sites and government offices they also performed cultural Pacific dances.

Vinycia said five local host families will accommodate the stay of the visiting students.

“The mayor’s office continues to accommodate these students as part of its cultural exchange program which also helps boost the tourism industry in the island,” she said.

The students who came from Saitama-ken, Nara-ken, Shiga-ken,Yamanashi-ken, Fukushima-ken and Nagano-ken, will be accompanied by their teacher Harumi Minagawa.

The students are from grade 4 to 8 and most of them female.

While in Saipan, Vinycia said the students will visit tourist and historical sites.

Since Saipan schools are on vacation, the Japanese students will be learning the island culture and tradition from their host families and in different places they will visit, she said.
