Now, Aguon is employed by Rep. Ralph S. Demapan, Covenant-Saipan, but he still cleans up the beach area as a volunteer.
He has been cleaning and maintaining the area from Sugar Dock to the Aquarius Beach Hotel while educating the people on environmental awareness and its importance to the tourism industry.
“I will continue my volunteer job, hoping that more people will follow suit,” he told Variety. “I will never get tired.”
Despite his job and his volunteer work, Aguon said he still finds time to attend to the needs of his family.
Aguon, who has five children, said he is very thankful that God gave him the strength to do what must be done.
“My family is not complaining although I continue to volunteer even if I have a regular job now,” he added.
In 2009, the House of Representatives adopted a resolution introduced by Rep. Raymond D. Palacios, Covenant-Saipan, then-Reps. Edwin P. Aldan, Covenant-Tinian, Oscar M. Babauta, Covenant-Saipan, and Justo S. Quitugua, D-Saipan, commending Aguon for his hard work and dedication in maintaining the beachside area.
“Aguon believes that volunteering his time is not only for a good deed but to help maintain the cleanliness and protect the frequent visitors of the area,” the resolution stated
Aguon was also selected by Beautify CNMI as its Environmental Steward awardee.
In an interview, Palacios said he appreciates the hard work of Aguon.
Because of Aguon’s effort, he added, the establishments in the area have been providing trash bags and other tools for the cleanup.
“They even gave Aguon food,” Palacios said. “It’s a good positive gesture from the community.”
Palacios said he hopes the other members of the community will help maintain Sugar Dock, especially with the construction of two pavilions in the area.
