The program provides student scholarships at three higher education institutions in the Mariana islands: the University of Guam, Guam Community College and Northern Marianas College. Graduating seniors from Guam’s and the NMI’s high schools who are enrolling in the islands’ tertiary institutions are invited to apply as well. Application forms will be made available to all high school senior counselors’ and principals’ offices and will be available at the financial aid offices of all three tertiary institutions, at the First Hawaiian Bank branches and the Glimpses of Guam office. Deadline for completed applications is July 31, 2011.
The scholarships are intended to promote higher education by providing financial assistance for college students in their pursuit of professional careers, and are open to both full-time and part-time students. The scholarships will be awarded based on merit, eligibility, a written essay, and financial need. Applicants should have a high school or college cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Funds for the scholarships will be raised through the 2011 Businesswoman of the Year gala at the Hyatt Regency Guam on April 30. The 2011 Businesswoman of the Year winner will be announced at the event.
The 2010 Businesswoman of the Year Maga’haga award recipient was Anna Wang Kao, founder and president of Genghis Khan Furniture Co. Past recipients include Lorraine S. Okada, executive manager of Carlsmith Ball LLP and president and owner of Managing Consulting Services; Julienne Rose Perez Duenas, physical therapist, owner and clinical director of Sports, Orthopedic and Active Rehabilitation Inc.; Christine Won Pat Baleto, general manager of Market Wholesale Distributors; Katherine Calvo Sgro, executive vice president and chairwoman of the board for Pay-Less Markets Inc.
