In the high school female singing category, freshman Chloe Hofschneider walked with first place for singing “Nånan-Måmi” by the Hofschneider Brothers.
Benjamin Huk Borja, a junior, introduced an original song “Buenas Marianas” composed by him and his father, Antonio SN, Borja, and was awarded a bronze medal.
Raena P. Cing, another junior, defended her title from last year and came home with the gold.
A corner room of UOG’s fieldhouse was standing room only as it was packed with parents, coaches, and spectators.
There, Megan Cruz, another ninth grader, charmed everyone at the oratorical competition with the theme “Na’ Magof Numa’fåmta I Fino’-ta Kada Hå’åni,” and walked away with her fourth gold medal.
She got two from the middle school level oratorical competition and one from her sixth grade poetry contest.
Freshman Mary Hocog got a gold medal for her original poem in the high school poetry category.
The success of these students would not have been possible without the support of the following individuals and agencies: Florine Hofschneider, TJSHS principal; Julian Hofschneider, TJHS Chamorro teacher and coach; Joseph T. San Nicolas, volunteer coach; Percy P. Cing, parent chaperone; the Tinian Municipal Council for the ground transportation’ Mayor Jose P. San Nicolas for the hotel accommodations and chaperone per diems; and the Public School System’s federal programs office for the airline tickets and subsistence allowance for the students.
Support also came from the Tinian legislative delegation, the parents of the contestants, and the community at large.
The school also thanked Mayor Savares of Dededo and the Guam Mayors Association for hosting a special dinner get-together.

THE Division of Revenue and Taxation is reminding CNMI residents that the deadline for the filing of the 2008 individual income tax return is Wednesday, April 15, while the 2009 first quarter deadline for filing the quarterly tax returns is Thursday, April 30.
These should be filed at the office Revenue and Taxation at the Joeten Dandan Commercial Center.
Deadline hours for April 15 are from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

(OES) — Oleai Elementary School’s registration for incoming kindergarten students for school year 2009-10 will be held from April 1 to 30.
Students entering kindergarten must be born between Sept. 1, 2003 to Aug. 31, 2004.
For new first grade and transferring students, registration will be from June to July.

Roundtable discussion on World War II
THE NMI Council for the Humanities cordially invites the public to attend a discussion on the remembrance and commemoration of World War II in the Pacific to be held at American Memorial Park’s Visitors Center Theater this Thursday evening, March 19, beginning at 6:30 p.m., a media release stated.
“War Memories: America, Asia and Pacific” will feature a roundtable discussion by Professors Keith L. Camacho, Greg Dvorak and Yujin Yaguchi to explore the celebration and contestation of World War II memories.
For more than a century, the peoples of America, Asia and the Pacific have interacted in ways that have yet to be fully appreciated and understood. World War II, in particular, has been a key focal point for the peoples of this region.
Camacho, Dvorak and Yaguchi will provide differing perspectives on this important but heretofore little studied topic drawing from their personal research on war memories and commemoration.
Camacho, whose family is from Guam and Saipan, is an assistant professor of Pacific Islander Ssudies at UCLA.
Dvorak is completing post-doctoral research at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Information Studies.
Yaguchi is associate professor of area studies, North American division, at the University of Tokyo.
