Recommendations for Pacific

offshore fisheries ready for review

HONOLULU (Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council) — The Scientific and Statistical Committee, which advises the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council, concluded its three-day meeting here in Honolulu on Thursday with a variety of recommendations for commercial and non-commercial fisheries in offshore waters of the U.S. Pacific islands.

These recommendations will be considered by the council when it convenes June 16 to 19, at the Ala Moana Hotel, Honolulu.

Decisions made by the council are transmitted to the secretary of commerce for approval.

Among the recommendations is a proposed restriction in the use of fishery aggregation devices by purse seiners in U.S. exclusive economic zone waters around American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and Hawaii.

When the council meets this week, it is scheduled to take action on the recommendations as well as on an implementation framework for the Community Development Program, which promotes involvement of indigenous communities in fisheries; management options for small-scale fisheries, which are facing increasing economic and bureaucratic constraints; and control dates for the CNMI longline and Hawaii charter vessel fisheries.

A control date is frequently established when the council begins considering a new limited entry program or the revision of an existing program.

A control date tells the public that the council may recommend that activities occurring after that date not count toward qualification for the limited entry program (or modification) being considered.

Many of the items are picnic debris and some household garbage.  Gloves, trash bags and refreshments will be provided for volunteers.

Volunteers will clean until 10 a.m. and break for drinks and then continues, if needed.

This month, outstanding brigade volunteers who participated in at least 10 monthly cleanups will receive a brigade cap and those who participated in at least three cleanups will receive a green brigade t-shirt.

This is a cleanup that should not be missed.

Let us work together for the health of our coral reefs and cleanliness of our beaches for everyone to enjoy.
