The Fire Division dispatched Engine #1 and a tanker to the  location.  The Division of Environmental Quality was also present at the scene.

According to preliminary reports, employees were cutting down metal sheets when a plastic seat was caught on fire. The fire was located underneath a pile of scrap metal and junk. A fork lift truck was used to remove the metal debris so that firefighters could flush out the fire with water.

The fire was brought under control by 12 noon There were no reports of any injuries and the business structure was not affected.

UH-Hilo gives boost to pre-pharmacy students in the Pacific

(PHI Pharmacy) — Members from a program in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Hawaii at Hilo will be on Saipan Oct. 27-28 to present information on how students in the Pacific region can get a head start in preparing for a career in pharmacy.

The representatives from UH-Hilo’s Pacific Pre-Pharmacy Program are talking with leaders of colleges in the U.S. American Affiliated Pacific Islands who are in Saipan for a meeting of the Pacific Postsecondary Education Council.

In addition, UH-Hilo program director Susan Jarvi and advising assistant and project coordinator Elizabeth Ryan will meet with healthcare professionals and students to explain the curriculum and solicit ideas.

“The program is designed to help students in the Pacific region who plan to apply to the College of Pharmacy,” Jarvi said. “Through mentorship, guidance and tutorial programs, we can provide a truly tailor-made educational experience.”

The visit to Saipan is the culmination of a tour of the Western Pacific, including Guam and Palau, where Jarvi and Ryan met with students, parents and administrators. Jarvi is developing the pre-pharmacy program along with co-investigator Anthony Wright, chair of pharmaceutical sciences, who met with pharmacists and students in Guam prior to her visit there. The program is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Live fire training on FDM

(EMO) — The U.S. military will conduct live fire training on Farallon De Mendenilla on Oct. 30 from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Due to the danger imposed by this activity, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial is strongly advising the public to stay away from this area during the time and date indicated.

Shell lowers fuel prices

(Shell) — Eloy Lizama, president of Shell Marianas, announced that they have lowered by 15 cents the prices of their unleaded, premium and diesel fuel products.

“Shell’s average market cost… has declined and [we] will pass these savings onto our customers,” he said.

Relocation of DPS sections

(DPS) — The Department of Public Safety would like to inform the community that beginning today, Oct.  27, the Traffic Section and the Criminal Investigation Bureau will be relocating their offices to the building that formerly housed the Residential Substance Abuse/Minimum Security Complex, which is located behind the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

 The Traffic Section and CIB will only occupy a portion of the building.

The Police Academy will be moving to the Kagman Community Center, while the Fire Academy will be relocated to the Kagman Fire Station.
