Around the Islands: August visitor arrivals up 9%

According to the Marianas Visitors Authority, arrivals to Saipan, Tinian and Rota registered 37,206 visitors last month compared to 34,251 in Aug. 2008.

Overall, fiscal year total arrivals to date are 6.69 percent fewer visitors than the same period in 2008.

The primary market of Japan, which makes up 55 percent of arrivals so far this year, posted an 11 percent increase in August to 19,537 visitors.

Arrivals from the NMI’s second largest market of Korea were virtually unchanged from Aug. 2008, posting 10,600 visitors in August 2009, a decrease of only 1 percent.

Bolstered by reinstated direct charter flights from Shanghai and Guangzhou, arrivals from China jumped 80 percent over Aug. 2008 arrivals to 3,892.

The secondary market of Russia dropped 9 percent to 573 arrivals.

Arrivals from Guam increased 7 percent to 1,622 visitors.

Farmers meeting

(DLNR) — The Department of Lands and Natural Resources and the Saipan and Northern Islands Soil and Water Conservation District will conduct a meeting to elect district board administrators today, Sept. 15, at the Garapan Fishing Base in Garapan, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

All farmers and ranchers are urged to attend this very important meeting.

(KKA) — Due to the typhoon, the Kagman Komunidat Association said the Laolao Bay Golf Resort job fair today has been postponed until further notice.
