Around the Islands: Guam college fall enrollment up 18%

GCC’s fall 2007 enrollment number stood at 1,794 students.

The fall 2009 enrollment represents the highest enrollment in the college’s history, according to GCC registrar Patrick Clymer.

GCC students are taking an average of 9.44 credit hours, or approximately three classes.

The top six programs of interest to enrolled students are the apprenticeship program, and degree and certificate programs in allied health (including medical assisting pre-nursing, and practical nursing), criminal justice, liberal arts, education, and early childhood education.

“The dramatic increase in enrollment at GCC is representative of students’ desire to not only be an integral part of the impending military buildup, as the enrollment in the apprenticeship program indicates, but also to increase their earning power, as the enrollment in our degree and certificate programs indicates,” said GCC president Dr. Mary Okada.

Okada also credited GCC’s first-ever enrollment drive at Micronesia Mall, the college’s outreach program in the villages, and its Express Registration on campus with making Guam Community College more accessible to students.

“Our primary concern is our students,” Okada said. “We are here to help them develop the skills they need to be competitive in the workplace, and providing easier access to our courses is part of that goal.”
