Emerging markets expert to speak at Manila conference

(Asia Pacific Association for Fiduciary Studies) — Dr. Mark Mobius, one of the leading world experts on investments and a regular commentator on Bloomberg and CNBC, is set to deliver the keynote address during the annual Pacific Region Investment Conference to be held this October in Manila.

Hawaii Pacific Export Council expands

HONOLULU (U.S. Department of Commerce) — The U.S. Department of Commerce’s local U.S. Commercial Service office announced that the Hawaii Pacific Export Council has expanded and diversified its membership to help more companies across Hawaii and the Western Pacific territories sell their products internationally.

The council now includes members from Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Hawaii Island, Guam, and the Northern Marianas.

The expanded council will now be able to reach more companies across the state of Hawaii and in Western U.S. territories, allowing the council to more effectively assist local small and medium sized businesses export their products and services overseas.

(SSHS) — All students that have been evaluated and graduated from junior high are entered into the system. However, you are still required to register.

You are not officially enrolled if your parents/legal guardians did not submit a registration form.

Forms can be picked up from the counseling office and submitted ASAP for your child to be enrolled in SSHS if you have obligations.

All returning students that attended last year must return all your textbooks and settle all obligations with the school, before you can pick up your class schedule. You will not be permitted to remain on campus.

Great Nationwide Kiss-In

THOUSANDS of supporters of equality for same-sex couples are joining together in over 50 U.S. and Canadian cities and towns, including Saipan, to take part in the Great Nationwide Kiss-In on Saturday, Aug. 15 at 2 p.m. EST, a media release said.

To occur simultaneously with the nationwide kiss-In, Saipan’s event is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 16 at 4 a.m.

The local event will start at 3:30 a.m. and will be held at the Minachom Atdao pavilion, across from Ada Gym.

Saipan Laolao donates $4,200 to NMC Foundation

(NMC) — The Saipan Laulau Development Inc., which owns and operates Laolao Bay Golf and Resort, a 36-hole golf course designed by Greg Norman, recently presented a $4,200 donation to the Northern Marianas College Foundation.

The donation was part of the company’s sponsorship of the s 7th Annual Foundation Open golf tournament, which was held last June.

Saipan Laulau Development had already donated $5,000 as part of their sponsorship — its total sponsorship contribution now amounts to more than $9,000.

“We are proud to help Northern Marianas College further its mission of helping CNMI residents improve their quality of life through educational advancement and professional development,” said Yun Kim, president/CFO of Saipan Laolao Bay Golf and Resort.

The donation was also part of the CNMI’s qualifying certificate program, which calls for Saipan Laulau Development to make public benefit contributions to community-based public programs and activities.

“We look forward to continuing our partnership with the college in many other ways, including the provision of internship opportunities and job placement possibilities,” Kim said.

“We are extremely grateful for Saipan Laolao’s donation and continued support of the college and the NMC Foundation,” said NMC Foundation president Ben Babauta.

The NMC Foundation is a non-profit organization whose goal is to raise funds to support Northern Marianas College, the CNMI’s lone post-secondary educational institution.

The organization is composed of individuals who are dedicated and committed to ensuring that CNMI students receive the utmost support in pursuing their educational goals.

“Saipan Laolao’s contribution and steadfast support reflects the company’s commitment to providing higher education opportunities for CNMI students,” said NMC President Dr. Carmen Fernandez. “We are thankful for their contribution.”

NMC offers course to improve English language skills

(NMC) — Northern Marianas College, through the Division of Community Programs and Services’ Community Development Institute, is offering short-term classes to interested individuals who wish to improve their English language skills.

The course is offered as part of the college’s mission to provide customized, continuing educational and professional development opportunities in response to community needs.

The course will teach participants the fundamentals of the English language such as enunciation, pronunciation and dialogue.

The course also aims to help participants understand and master grammatical concepts necessary for interactive skills development.

Throughout the course, students will practice these concepts in oral dialogue and conversation exercises.

Additionally, the classes, which are designed to improve individual knowledge and specific skills, are geared around actual workforce needs and experiences based on course surveys, community needs assessments, and interviews with employers.

The August/September course schedule and fees are listed below.
