He said the remaining 13 Uighurs will not all resettle in Palau but there are between 4 or 9 detainees who agreed to move to Palau.
He said the transfer will likely occur “before January of next year.”HE confirmed that nothing has been signed yet, but the agreement is being prepared by both the United States and Palauan government.The agreement, he said contains the terms of transfer. U.S. Congressman Nick Rahall (West Virginia) who was here in Palau thanked the Toribiong government for receiving the Uighurs.Rahall who is the chairman of the U.S. delegation that visited Palau said the gesture was a show of the country’s commitment to the U.S.In June, Toribiong announced that Palau is accepting the temporary resettlement of the detainees.Palau and U.S. is in a middle of Compact of Free Association review.The Palau government however denied any links to the Compact on its decision to accept the Uighurs.The president said it is out of humanitarian gesture and to strengthen the friendship between Palau and the U.S.
