Around the Islands: Tinian joins International Coastal Cleanup Day

Bright and early at 8 a.m. sharp, the business volunteers began the cleanup process and successfully collected over 25 bags of trash and four truckloads of debris by 12 noon.

According to Tinian Chamber of Commerce president Phillip Mendiola-Long, “This was a real eye opener to all of us, seeing the type of trash that washes up on our shores was frightening. I never knew how much plastic collects on our beaches. It is one thing to see it on the beach as you walk by or while you are swimming or BBQing at the beach, but to sit there and collect trash for four hours and fill bag after bag after bag was a wake up call for continued action. I would venture to say that nearly 2/3rds of all our 27 bags of trash was filled with plastics.”

The chamber said the event was a huge success and the coastal cleanup event will now turn into a regular quarterly project for the Tinian Chamber of Commerce.

“After we spent the morning collecting the enormous amounts of trash, all of the chamber members recommended that we continue to hold coastal cleanup events every three months. Everyone really had a good time and it turned out to be a good way to bring the community and families together for a great cause. It was and will be a win-win for everyone involved…including mother nature,” said Mendiola-Long

The Tinian Chamber of Commerce would like to thank the following participants and companies who helped tremendously in the 2009 International Coastal Cleanup Day: Allen Perez, Susan Cruz, Michelle Cruz, Mariah Cruz, Giancarlo San Nicolas, Patricia San Nicolas, JP San Nicolas, Kemmy Evangelista, Arley Long, Tasi Long, Isa Long, Cielo Long, Phillip Long, Rigor Barit, Vince Requiron, Tandy Rutor, Sherwin Pascua, Henry Hofschneider, Luis Hofschneider, Adrian Yue, Audrey Yue, Don Power, Liza Power, Sen.
