Babauta to attend conference on homeland security

GOVERNOR Juan N. Babauta, who recently arrived from Washington, D.C., is headed back to the U.S., this time to attend the 2002 National Governors Association meeting in Boise, Idaho.

He will discuss the CNMI’s role in the global war on terrorism, one of his special assistants said.

This meeting of the nation’s state, commonwealth and territory governors will focus on homeland security and the fight against terrorism. “The governor will discuss the CNMI’s ideas in combating terrorism,” according to his special assistant for federal policy and research, Sonya Artero.

“The CNMI will have a key role in this conference,” she added.

Babauta will be accompanied by his senior policy advisor Robert Schwalbach to the meeting, which will be held from July 13 to 16.

The meeting will discuss the need to upgrade the capabilities of the nation’s police officers, firefighters and emergency responders.

“They will also discuss the role played by wireless communication carriers in public safety,” Artero said.

The session on Sunday, July 14, will focus on homeland security, what other countries are doing to combat terrorism, the patterns of terrorism and other international terrorist hotspots.

Anthrax attacks and the improvements needed in public health to deal effectively with bio-terrorism will also be tackled.
