Babauta, US Marshal discuss ‘key issues’

GOVERNOR Juan N. Babauta met with the U.S. Marshal for Guam and the CNMI, Joaquin LG. Salas, to discuss two key issues concerning the U.S. Marshal’s role in the commonwealth.

The administration wants the U.S. Marshal’s office to coordinate with the CNMI government whenever it is going to effect a seizure order affecting the commonwealth.

Babauta reiterated his disappointment over the Marshal’s failure to inform the CNMI government about the seizure of two Tinian ferries.

“But it appears that it will be difficult for them to do so since they were just following the court’s order,” Babauta said.

However, the governor said Salas is in favor of having a permanent U.S. Marshal stationed in the CNMI.

According to Babauta, Salas said he cannot perform two duties at the same time as the U.S. Marshall for Guam and the CNMI.

Babauta said that from the CNMI’s standpoint, the commonwealth economy will also benefit if it will have its own Marshal.

“The money they are spending benefits Guam, when it is supposed to benefit us here,” he said.
