Big crowd expected for blackjack championship over the weekend

Dynasty casino marketing & promotions manager Chell Funtanar said they are expecting 150 or more participants.

“This is a surprising and unexpected number because more players usually come here for the Baccarat Challenge and not blackjack but we are happy for this turnout,” Funtanar said.

This weekend’s players are from Japan, Korea and China. The preliminary rounds will be tomorrow afternoon and winners will be able to advance to the semi finals, before finally battling it out at the table for the championship round beginning at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Funtanar said the additional charter flights from China have contributed to the larger number of participants this month.

“Despite the hard economy, we are glad people still come here to patronize the casino. Some of the participants have been here on Tinian since Tuesday yet, and we are happy because this is a big boost to the economy,” Funtanar said.

Up to $70,000 prize pool is at stake for this month’s blackjack championship.

The $1,000 entry fee includes two nights’ deluxe hotel accommodation, exclusive “invitation only” cocktail dinner, meals, tournament beverages, and airfare reimbursement.

Funtanar said  more tournaments are scheduled throughout the year in the hotel’s bid to spur economic activities on Tinian. Tinian Dynasty Casino & Hotel has also been holding poker tournaments for CNMI residents for the past months.
