BOE member eyes regular tsunami evacuation drills in schools

“We are living in an area that is tremendously vulnerable and we do have a lot of storms,” she said.

It is always proper to be prepared for unexpected catastrophes, King said.

She wants to see schools  conducting tsunami evacuation drills regularly not only during the Disaster Preparedness Month every September.

In December, during the regular session of the Board of Education, the regular tsunami drill will be on her agenda.

King said the drill should be conducted once a month “so there will be a systematic and regular process for the children practicing in the drill.”

She encouraged all schools to get the assistance of government agencies tasked to conduct the drill.

Hopwood Junior High School principal Jonas Barcinas also wants to conduct regular tsunami drills.

Joaquin P. Omar, Emergency Management Office director, said EMO is willing to help, but schools must prepare an evacuation plan first.

EMO, he said, is coordinating with the Department of Public Safety, Homeland Security, Red Cross, and the fire division in conducting  drills.
