Camacho again asks Homeland Security, EMO to install tsunami warning siren

He said an early warning system will effectively alert the public to prevent catastrophic consequences from an impending tsunami.

The council made the request to CNMI Homeland Security Director Patrick P. Tenorio and Emergency Management Office Joaquin Omar director.

But Camacho said the council has not received any reply from both agencies.

The neighboring islands in the Pacific have already installed sirens, he added.

The coastal villages of Saipan also need an early warning system with highly visible and identifiable lights. Schools and churches are located in these villages: San Roque, Tanapag, Garapan, Oleia/San Jose, San Antonio and Susupe.

Camacho said Homeland Security and EMO must also develop a system of mass notification through text messaging by cooperating with the telecommunication companies on island.

Moreover, he said, Homeland Security and EMO should conduct regular outreach activities to educate the general public regarding a tsunami disaster.
