Chamorro orthography may change

The workshop, hosted by the Chamorro-Carolinian Language Policy Commission, will continue for five days at different venues.

Commission director David Omar said they are in the process of analyzing and investigating the current official Chamorro orthography which was submitted by the Marianas Orthography Committee to the Trust Territory education director in 1971.

Omar said during the five-day workshop, they will determine which part of the orthography is still applicable today.

“Dangkolo” and “dankolo,” for example, are used interchangeably, but both means big, he added.

The workshop will provide the participants an idea regarding what rules need to change and how they are going to be changed, Omar said.

“We are expecting changes but they are not necessarily drastic,” Omar said, adding that their goal is make the language easier for students to learn.

The first day of the workshop focused on the current orthography rules.

The presenters included Henry Sablan, Rita Inos, Bill Macaranas, Sandra Chung and Carmen Taitano.

The other participants were Tita Hocog, Angie Fitial, Ben Borja, Julie Calvo, Manny Borja, Rose Warakai, Lumi Bermudes, Bernie Sablan, Rose Taimano, Vivian Odoshi, Vince Rabauliman, Rit Guerrero, Rose Magofna, Joe Sanchez and Noel Quitugua.
