Collection of donations for deployed servicemembers in full swing

Program assistant director Fred Camacho yesterday said  they will display banners and streamers to help spread awareness of the group’s efforts.

“What will be in the display are food and other items that we would suggest the community to donate for sending to the CNMI soldiers who were presently deployed,” Camacho said.

He said  a donation box will be placed near the display  for individuals who would like to send something to the servicemembers.

Camacho said they are working with partner agencies to coordinate with the volunteers who will be stationed at the Joeten stores, Price Cosco, Payless and Fleming Store on Tinian.

The food drive will run for the whole month, he added.

“We are hoping to get all the boxes filled and sent by the first week of November. Hopefully the troops would get the packages in time for Christmas,” he said.

According to Camacho, they have already received various donations from the community.

Program director Geri Willis earlier told the Variety that they would accept donations to fill up the care packages.

Donations could be an assortment of canned goods, personal hygiene products, newspapers, letters and any other items that will remind the troops of home.

“Receiving goodies from home could help alleviate some of the stress of deployment, and instill in the minds of the soldiers that we are thinking of them,” she said.

Willis said the CNMI has deployed over 200 servicemembers to the Middle East.

Interested individuals who would like to donate items for the servicemembers can visit the stores when the food drive campaign starts on Saturday. They can also contact Willis or Camacho at 237-3287 or e-mail [email protected].
