Commonwealth envoy to seek ‘continued engagement’ with Fiji

A statement by the secretariat said Reeves would “explore opportunities for continued Commonwealth engagement toward an inclusive and time-bound national political dialogue.”

He flew into Fiji for two days of talks with Bainimarama and other “senior functionaries” of the Fiji government.

The statement said he hoped to meet “other key stakeholders.”

Reeves is acting as special representative of Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma.

Sharma said he welcomed Bainimarama’s invitation for a Commonwealth delegation to visit Fiji “and fully support this opportunity for my special representative to engage with the government to promote an early restoration of constitutional democracy in the country in line with Commonwealth principles.”

There has been no indication of whether Reeves will meet former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase and Fiji Labor Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry, both of whom were part of the Presidential Political Dialogue Forum which the Commonwealth wants to revive.

The PPDF aimed to build consensus between political leaders towards a return to democracy until it stalled and was replaced by the government roadmap which scheduled elections in 2014.
