Community helpers meet with Head Start kids

“For this month we’re celebrating  community helpers, so we invited different departments from government agencies to come and do a short presentation or demonstration for the kids from Head Start and kindergarten,” said Oleai school’s Elaine Tudela.

Different government agencies such as the Department of Public Safety, the Division of Customs Service, the Commonwealth Utilities Corp., CNMI Forestry, and the Division of Fish and Wildlife participated in the event, which was held at the school field.

Parent volunteers as well as teachers were involved in the activity.

The children were very curious about the visual presentations and eagerly participated in hands-on activities.

The different agencies presented materials or equipment that captured the students’ interest.

“It is a great opportunity for both the community and the children,” said Tudela.

One of the presentations that caught the children’s attention was CUC’s.

The agency’s Heidi Yelin showed them how water samples are tested.

“We demonstrated how the CUC lab staff test chlorine and take the samples back to the laboratory and test it for bacteria,” she added.
