Conference to tackle waterfront dispute

PORT MORESBY (The National/PINA) — A compulsory conference between the waterfront workers union and the Papua New Guinea Employers Federation is reconvening to address issues from last week’s six-day strike.

Members of the Papua New Guinea Maritime Workers’ Industrial Union went on strike demanding the government award them a 40 percent consumer price index-based pay increase.

It affected work at the ports of Port Moresby, Lae, Wewak, Madang, Rabaul and Alotau.

The workers returned to work last week after the National Court ordered them to do so and at the same time urged them to abide by provisions of industrial relations conduct.
