Congressional delegation to visit NMI

Congressman Gregorio C. Sablan told the media  that Rahall and other members of the committee, which has oversight jurisdiction over the CNMI and other insular areas, will visit the islands probably in the first week of August.

At least one major bill is up for the committee’s action soon, H.R. 934, which seeks to grant the CNMI control over three miles of its 200-mile exclusive economic zone or submerged lands.

The committee also awaits the findings of its Subcommittee on Insular Affairs regarding Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and Guam Gov. Felix Camacho’s request to further delay the federalization law’s scheduled Nov. 28, 2009 implementation.

Sablan said the schedule for Rahall’s visit may still change.

“Something could come up and change things,” he added.

Rahall, 60, was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976.
