CUC deputy executive director Alan W. Fletcher said the supply will be distributed for Saipan, Rota and Tinian.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency already approved the item, he said.
CUC’s existing agreement for the supply of chlorine gas expired on August 11, 2011.
Prior to the expiration of contract, he said CUC notified EPA it has successfully entered into a contract with a chlorine gas supplier.
Fletcher said EPA conditionally approved CUC’s chlorination and disinfection program on March 4, 2011.
Entering into a long-term contract for chlorine shipments adequate to carry out the chlorination and disinfection requirement is part of the Stipulated Order 1.
CUC executive director Abe Utu Malae earlier said that chlorination is one of the most successful of the stipulated order deliverables.
CUC, he added, submitted a response to EPA in May 2011 and anticipates its final approval.
Fletcher said that CUC has secured a long-term solution for chlorine storage by the retrofit of an existing bunker.
“Cleanup of the bunker is underway and next steps include obtaining applicable permits to construct a loading dock,” he said.
CUC earlier met all requirements for chlorine inventories prior the typhoon season, he said.
