CUC needs over 70,000 gallons of fuel each day

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, who recently invoked his constitutional authority to again declare a state of emergency to reprogram funds for CUC, said 61,080 gallons of fuel are needed each day for the power plants on Saipan, 7,500 gallons for Tinian, and 1,610 gallons for Rota.

He said CUC used to order fuel for a month’s consumption. This later went down to weeks’ worth of fuel supply and recently, to days’ worth of fuel.

“Now, CUC lacks the cash to pay Mobil for any more fuel supply,” the governor said in his state of emergency declaration which suspends all statutory or regulatory provisions governing CUC and allows him to reprogram funds for fuel purchases.

CUC is considered not credit worthy and has no ability to borrow.
