Rotary Club installs new set of officers, directors

Installed into office were vice president Glen Perez, secretary Victoria Concepcion, treasurer Amie Javier, director of club service Laila C. Younis-Boyer, director of community service Josh Sasamoto, director of vocational service Jeff Boyer, director of international service Kim Forrester, director of foundation service Vicente Babauta, Sgt-at-Arms Richard Cody, and president-elect Nel Matanguihan.

Rotary Club of Saipan’s new president Michael Brazel did not make it as he was in the U.S. to attend a conference.

Brazel in his message read by vice president Perez said the Rotary Club of Saipan needs the full commitment of every member so it can move to a higher level.

“A good organization cannot remain static. It either continues to grow and improve, or it continues to decline,” Brazer said.

He said the Rotary Club has scratched the surface of what is possible as he stressed the importance of teamwork in accomplishing anything.

Brazel said one of the projects the Rotary Club can promote for this year is the continuing development of the playground in Kagman.

Looking back, outgoing president Kim Forrester said the year had been a good one for the club, with two major successful events — the Las Vegas Fund Raiser, and the Parade of Books — held on the same day.

“My biggest thank you goes out to all members for helping me through the past year. It was not easy for me but because of you, I have made it,” Forrester said.

Special awards

Marianas Variety president Laila C. Younis-Boyer is this year’s Rotarian of the Year.

Younis-Boyer said that she felt honored to receive the award.

“I’m overwhelmed because this is my first year to join the Rotary Club and thank you very much,” she said.

Marianas Visitors Authority board chairman Jerry Tan was named Citizen of the Year.

Tan is 25th Citizen of the Year awardee since 1980.

The Honorary Rotarian Award was given to coach Joe Diaz for his exemplary effort to strengthen sports teams for the young people of the islands.

The Rotarians also recognized  former club service director Mike Tripp for his outstanding performance.

Established in 1968, the Rotary Club of Saipan has over 40 members and has been actively supporting various community projects over the years.
