CUC reviews 10 applications for technical manager’s position

Last Saturday, a CUC panel interviewed the applications, CUC Executive Director Abe Utu Malae said.

“We reviewed the first part of the list with [the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency] who advised us to dig deeper for candidates,” he told Variety in an email.

Malae said because of the seriousness of oil management compliance issues, EPA wanted to ensure that the person selected possessed not only the skills, but current knowledge of the industry.

CUC human resources manager Frankie Cepeda said aside from the shortlist submitted by the consultant there were at least three applicants who directly contacted CUC.

The minimum requirements  include four years in college with major work in engineering, science or other fields related to work in engineering, science, project management, and environmental compliance; and one to three years of experience in oil spill prevention, preparedness and response, environmental assessment, construction oversight or power plant operations.

The technical manager’s position will get a two-year contract and a salary ranging from $85,000 to $140,000 a year.

The position was opened when William Sword vacated the post late last year.

EPA gave CUC 150 days to fill the vacancy which is one of the requirements of the federal stipulated orders.

Cepeda said they were given until May 16 by EPA to fill the position.

But Variety learned that EPA extended the period to allow CUC to gather a “pool of applicants.”
