CUC says trying to meet deadline on water meter installation

The division’s operation manager, Mariano Iglecias, said as of Nov. 30, about 1,962 new water meters had already been installed in different areas of the island.

“We have a self-imposed deadline to get all defective meters by Dec. 31,” he added.

Iglecias said they replace an average of 35 meters every day.

“We have put a lot of emphasis in the project and we are providing adequate staff for the operation,” he added.

When replacing the defective meters, Iglecias said the customers are assured of their actual usage.

CUC deputy director for water and wastewater Bruce Megarr said the new water meters are calibrated to deter possible water theft.

The replacement of the defective water meters, he added, can be accomplished before the deadline set by the court, stated in the federally stipulated orders.

The orders gave CUC until  March 11, 2010  to comply with the water meter installation, reading and billing program.
